1. Educational Support for Wat Mahanaparam School

The First Primary School of Thailand

“Supporting educational opportunities is laying the foundation for the nation’s future.”

General Arthit Kamlang-ek

General Arthit served as the Chairman of the Piya Maharaja Memorial Foundation, making remarkable contributions to children and youth. One notable example is Wat Mahannapharam School, the very first royal school for the general public in Thailand. In his role as Chairman of the Piya Maharaja Memorial Foundation, he played a key part in supporting the institution.

General Arthit once wrote about this project as follows:

“I had the honor of serving as Chairman of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Wat Mahannapharam School in 1984 (B.E. 2527), while I was Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army. In the past, my home was located near Wat Mahannapharam, and I was aware that this institution had a long and significant history as the first royal school for the people in Thailand, graciously established by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1884 (B.E. 2427). Later, I initiated the construction of the royal statue of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, installed at Wat Mahannapharam, and established the Piya Maharaja Memorial Foundation to support the school’s development and maintain the royal statue, which still stands to this day.

I was deeply honored and grateful upon learning that Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously placed Wat Mahannapharam School under her royal patronage and decreed that its name be changed from ‘Wat Mahannop School’ back to its original name ‘Wat Mahannapharam School,’ thereby preserving its historical heritage and legacy.

In 2014 (B.E. 2557), to mark the school’s 130th anniversary—honoring both His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, who graciously founded this institution as the first royal school for the public, and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who took the school under her royal patronage—the school resolved to produce a commemorative chronicle to record its history for future generations. The Piya Maharaja Memorial Foundation wishes to offer its full support to this endeavor, with the hope that it will achieve the success intended, preserving the dignity and invaluable legacy of this esteemed school for all time.”

2. “Diamond in the Rough” Project

https://edu.swu.ac.th/about-us/diamond-edu/

The General Arthit–Phornsan Kamlang-ek Foundation places great importance on youth across all regions of Thailand, particularly children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in the three southern border provinces and other special areas. The Foundation is committed to creating tangible educational opportunities, enabling these young people to develop their potential, build confidence, and gain the chance to lead better lives.

One of the Foundation’s key initiatives that reflects its steadfast commitment is the “Diamonds in the Mud” Project, a collaboration between the Faculty of Education, Srinakharinwirot University, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), and the Ministry of Education. The project aims to promote educational opportunities for youth in special areas, such as Self-Development and Protection Villages and the three southern border provinces.

The Foundation provides scholarships, skill development, career guidance, and opportunities for motivated youth, focusing not only on academic growth but also on life skills development. The goal is to enable young people to learn, grow, and become key contributors to the development of their communities and the nation.

Today, the Diamonds in the Mud Project continues to operate actively. The Foundation closely monitors and mentors graduates of the program, ensuring ongoing support. Many of these youth have gone on to succeed in life and pursue careers across diverse fields including education, business management, healthcare, social services, arts and culture, and community work. Their achievements reflect the effectiveness of the program and the Foundation’s dedication to laying a strong foundation for the future.

The Foundation’s support for youth embodies the vision of General Arthit Kamlang-ek, who stated

“Supporting youth is the vital strength of the nation.”

The Foundation believes that providing opportunities and nurturing the potential of young people is an investment in national strength. This approach not only cultivates high-quality youth but also contributes to building a strong, sustainable society.

“The International Ordination Project

is about passing on

the light of wisdom

and peace

to the world.”

Phornsan Kamlang-ek

Rooted in a deep faith in Buddhism and a strong desire to see the teachings of the Buddha reach and benefit people across the globe, the General Arthit–Phornsan Kamlang-ek Foundation, led by Khun Phornsan Kamlang-ek, Chairperson, and Venerable Praputt Buddhibalo,  (her son), recognizes the importance of cultivating high-quality monks and developing international ordination training programs encompassing study, practice, and monastic discipline.

To elevate the standards of international monk training, the Foundation has sponsored and supported the construction of the iMonastery Chiang Mai (International Forest Monastery Chiang Mai) , which began at the end of 2021 and officially opened in March 2022 under the Monk Life Project. This short-term 30-day program focuses on foundational Buddhist studies, meditation practice, and application of the teachings in daily life.

Subsequently, the Foundation also built the iMonastery Pak Thong Chai (International Forest Monastery Pak Thong Chai), Nakhon Ratchasima, officially inaugurated on February 22, 2024, to accommodate international monks interested in long-term ordination through the Monk 4 Life three-year program. The goal is to provide comprehensive training in study and practice, cultivating virtuous, high-quality monks who can play a vital role in spreading Buddhism internationally.

The Foundation believes that supporting Buddhism and nurturing high-quality monks inspires people worldwide to discover inner peace and apply the Buddha’s teachings in their everyday lives. These concrete efforts not only develop individuals and youth but also help create strong, sustainable communities and societies.

These initiatives reflect the Foundation’s vision and steadfast commitment: to see Buddhism flourish globally and enable everyone to access the peace and wisdom within themselves.
